Accuracy, limits, and good practice
- Character limits usually include spaces, but some forms count without them — the two figures differ by roughly a sixth on normal prose.
- Word counting rules differ between tools on hyphenated compounds and numbers, so a limit measured elsewhere may differ by a word or two.
- Aim slightly under a hard limit. Submission forms that truncate rather than warn will cut mid-sentence without asking.
- Paragraph count tells you something the word count cannot: a 900-word text in two paragraphs is a wall, and the same text in nine is readable.

About two pages double-spaced or one page single-spaced in a typical 12-point font, though layout changes this considerably.
