Profit Margin Calculator
Calculate revenue, profit, margin, and markup
Profit Margin Calculator — what it does
Enter a unit cost, a selling price and a quantity, and get revenue, total cost, profit, profit margin and markup. Margin and markup are the two numbers people mix up constantly, and seeing both from the same inputs is the quickest way to stop confusing them.
When this tool helps
- Setting a price that achieves a target margin rather than a target markup.
- Checking the profitability of a product line at a given volume.
- Translating a supplier's markup quote into the margin your accounts will report.
How to use it
- Enter the cost per unit.
- Enter the selling price per unit.
- Enter the quantity.
- Calculate to see revenue, cost, profit, margin and markup.
Accuracy, limits, and good practice
- Margin is profit over price; markup is profit over cost. A 50 percent markup is only a 33 percent margin, and confusing them wrecks pricing.
- This is gross margin. Overheads, salaries, marketing and tax sit below it and decide whether the business actually makes money.
- To hit a target margin, divide cost by one minus the margin: a 40 percent margin on a cost of 60 needs a price of 100.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Same profit, different denominator. Margin divides by the selling price, markup divides by the cost — so markup is always the larger number.
What margin should I aim for?
It varies enormously: retail often runs 20 to 50 percent gross, software far higher, distribution far lower. Compare against your own sector.
Are shipping and fees included?
Only if you put them in the unit cost. For marketplace selling with percentage fees, the e-commerce profit calculator models them properly.
