Color Blindness Simulator
Preview an image under common color-vision deficiency simulations
Color Blindness Simulator — what it does
Load an image and this tool re-renders it through a simulation of protanopia, deuteranopia, tritanopia or complete achromatopsia. Each mode transforms the colour channels the way the corresponding cone deficiency does, giving a realistic preview of how roughly one in twelve men and one in two hundred women will see your design.
When this tool helps
- Checking whether a chart still reads when its red and green series look nearly identical to a viewer with deuteranopia.
- Reviewing a UI where status is signalled only by colour, such as a red error next to a green success state.
- Testing marketing artwork, maps or signage before print, when a redesign after production is expensive.
How to use it
- Choose the image you want to check.
- Select a simulation type from the list.
- Review the rendered preview against the original.
- Download the result to attach to a design review.
Accuracy, limits, and good practice
- Deuteranopia and protanopia together account for the large majority of colour-vision deficiency; test those two first.
- If a distinction disappears under simulation, add a second cue — a label, an icon, a pattern or a difference in lightness.
- Simulations approximate perception rather than reproduce it. They are excellent for finding problems, not for certifying accessibility.
Frequently asked questions
Which type is the most common?
Deuteranomaly, a reduced green sensitivity, is by far the most frequent form, and deuteranopia is the closest simulation available here.
Does passing this mean my design is accessible?
It is one useful check. Contrast ratios, text size, focus states and keyboard access all matter as much as colour separation.
Can I simulate partial deficiency?
These modes simulate the full dichromatic case, which is the strictest test. A design that survives it will comfortably survive milder anomalies.
